Anglerfish Ovary & Microscopic Photography

By Michael Gakuran | | Bioluminescence | 20 Comments |

Ever seen what the ovary of that bioluminescent deep sea monstrosity the anglerfish looks like? How about the mouth of a sea urchin, oral surface of a starfish or a freshwater dinoflagellate? Dig into this collection of microscopic photographs that show just how much we’re really not seeing in our lives.

I came across this fantastic collection of photographs as part of the annual Nikon Small World competition. All credit for these beautiful images goes to their respective authors. You can find all the images and sources in the Nikon gallery. Enjoy!

Ugh… And THIS is just what we find in *one* drop of pondwater?

Freshwater dinoflagellate. Not sure about this one, but some forms are bioluminescent!

sea-urchin-mouth

A fiery pit of anemone doom… Or just the mouth orifice.

guppy-fish-embryo

A guppy fish embryo. Can we all say together..? Awwwww….

Giant liposomes. Yea, me too… What??

A little early, but here’s the first snowflake of the year.

A zebrafish larvae with fluorescent neurons. Tasty.

And lastly, some fruit-fly embryos that look suspiciously like skittles…

Alrighty! Be sure to check out the full list on the Nikon homepage! Definitely many more freakishly cool pictures there that I missed out ^^.

Oh, and tell me, what was your favourite picture here, and why?

These pictures are amazing! I love the inside of the anemone’s mouth personally. It made me think of what a fish would see if they lived inside of one. =)

Good evening. My name is Kurahashi. It is a very mysterious image. I liked the image of the snowflake. My wife answered it that the same image liked the first accidentally.
The Mr. and Mrs. us gets along well very much and is close. (I speak fondly of my sweetheart, and this is a story)

They’re all so gorgeous! Especially the soap film, even though you haven’t posted that one here, it reminds me of a Klimt painting I saw a long time ago.

The snowflake is beautiful too. It reminds me that there is a snow system on the way.

Love the zebrafish, that’s amazing how you can see its nervous system all lit up (or at least I think it’s the nervous system, I’m not good with biology lol)

Wowza, amazing pictures! My favourite is the eggy because it looks absolutely on fire. So much energy concentrated on such a small area – like firefly butts, they just entrance me.
