The Secret of Monkey Island

Arr...And what a swashbuckling adventure this will be!

NOTE

This walkthrough will definitely spoil this great game for you!

Only use this as a last resort.  I have organized it so it will unveil as little as possible about things you do not yet want to know about.  Have fun, and remember;

YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!

Part I

Walk into the Scumm Bar.

Open the door and go inside. Talk to the pirates sitting at the tables inside to find out about the situation on the island.

Then, talk to the important looking pirates and they will tell you about the three trials.

When the cook is serving the pirates at the tables, sneak inside the kitchen. Grab the meat and the pot.

Chase the bird away by knocking the plank. When it flies away, you can get the fish. Now, walk to the cliffside to the outpost.

Walk to the path just outside the village. You will see map with a figure representing Threepwood.

Go to the clearing.

You will find a circus here. Go inside the circus tent and talk to the Fettucini Brothers.

They ask you to perform a dangerous act. When you have been asked if you have brought a helmet or not, get out the pot you found in the kitchen. Do the act for 478 pieces of eight.

Now that you have some money, you can go back to the village.

Buy a map from the man with the parrot.

Talk to the three men standing with a rat. Take the minute from them if they give you 2 pieces of eight.

Go to the voodoo house.

Go inside and pick up the rubber chicken.

Go to the right and talk to the voodoo lady inside, and ask her about your fortune, then go to the old man's shop.

It's the first house you will find after you walk through the archway under the clock. (Hit the bell if he is not around).

Buy the sword and shovel by picking them up and trying to leave. The old man only sell certain items when you do certain things. So, after some encounters, you should return to here.

Go outside the village and walk to the bridge.

Give the troll a fish and go to the house. Open the door and talk to one eyed jack. Pay him to learn to  fight. Get out your sword and fight for many hours...

The object is not just to fight, but also to insult your opponent.  Right now it's wise to go around the map fighting the pirates and learning new insults-but don't worry, they'll be added to your list! The better insults are at the top of your list. After you have won enough battles. You can try to defeat the Swordmaster.

Go to the fork.

These are the directions to reach the swordmaster through the forest, so try before looking at this! Take these directions to reach the swordmaster: (Note the cool music here!)

North. When you see a plant with yellow flowers, pick them up.

North.

East.

East.

West.

North.

Push the sign post to lower the bridge and cross it to fight the swordmaster.  Now that you've found her house you can go directly back there from now on.  Insult her correctly 5 times to win.  Just keep trying or check out the insults page to see what matches what.

Go to the Governor's House.

The mansion is guarded by deadly piranha poodles. Use the yellow petal on the meat.

The meat will become drugged so give the meat with condiment to the dogs.

After they fall asleep, go inside the mansion. Open the door inside the mansion and you will go into the fight scene. Just watch... Check your inventory after the fight, and you will have a few more items added to it.

  You need a file to get the idol.

Go to the prison and talk to prisoner.

He needs some breath mints. Go back to the shopkeeper and this time you can buy the breath mints from him. Get the breath mints and give them to the prisoner.

He wants some rat repellent, so give the gopher repellent to him and he will give you a carrot cake in return.

'Use' the cake. There is a file inside.

Go back to the mansion to get the idol. Jump into the gaping hole, and you will get into another fight.

When you've got the idol, talk to the sheriff. The governor appears and chases the sheriff away.

Talk to her. After she's left, open the door to go outside the mansion.

The sheriff is waiting for you. You are thrown into the sea by the sheriff.

Under the water, get idol and then walk up. Talk to the governor on the docks.

Go on a treasure Hunt. Go to the Scumm Bar and talk to the important pirates.

Tell them your progress.

Go the fork again to find the lost treasure.

These are the directions to the treasure. Try yourself first!

Take this path:

North. You should see yellow flowers.

West. You will find a campsite here.

Take the left to the north.

West.

North.

West. A skeleton is here.

North.

North.

East.

West.

North. There is a place full of red flowers.

East. 'X' marks the spot so use the shovel on the 'X' to get the treasure.

Return to the village. You see a ghost ship sailing away. Talk to the cook and he will tell you that the governor has been kidnapped by the ghost pirate Lechuck!

Find a ship and a crew of 3 to go after the ghost ship.

Pick up all the grog mugs that are on the table in the scumm bar.

Go into the kitchen and use the grog barrel with a mug. The grog is very corrosive so a mug will not hold the grog for long.

When the mug is almost melted, change it for another by swapping the drinks over.

Find the shortest way to the prison.

When you reach the prison, use the melting mug on the lock to melt it.

Ask the prisoner to join your crew.

If the mug melts before you get to the prison, just restart from the scumm bar.

Go to the Swordmaster's house. Ask her to join your crew.

Go outside the village to the shore

Use the rubber chicken on the cable to get to the island, the man, Meathook will ask you to take a test, it's dead easy...

Go to Stan's Used Ship Emporium where the lights are.

Talk to Stan and mention about buying the ships on credit. He will give you a business card.

Go the old man's house and save the game now.

Ask him to get a note of credit for you.

He open's the safe and gets the note.

Watch how he open's the safe and note down the combination. (This is different on every game you start).

If you miss the combination, go outside and come back again. The old man will repeat it again.

When you are sure of the combination, ask him to look for the swordmaster.

Unlock the safe and get the credit note.

Go to the ship yard and bargain for the 'Sea Monkey' with Stan by gradually increasing your offer.  After getting the ship and the compass, your crew will be waiting...

Part II

After the conversation with the crew, get the feather pen and the ink.

Open the drawer, get the dusty book and read it carefully for hints on how to get to monkey island.

Go to the deck and talk to the crew.

Go to the rope ladder and get the pirate flag and return to the deck.

Go to the hatch behind the crew.

There is another hatch that leads to the store and a door that leads to the kitchen,  so go to the kitchen.

Get the pot.

Open the cupboard, and get the cereal.

Open cereal to get the prize.

Look at the prize, it's a small key!

Go down the second hatch to the store room and open the chest to get the fine wine.

Grab the giant coil of rope.

Open the kegs to get the gunpowder.

Go the captain's room.

Open the cabinet with the small key.

Open the chest to get a recipe (which you should read) and some cinnamon sticks. Head to the kitchen.

This is a list of what to put into the pot:

Minutes, note, business card, feather pen, cereal, Jolly Roger, ink, breath mints, fine wine, 100% cotton T-shirt, T-shirt, rubber chicken, staple remover, small key, dusty book, cinnamon sticks and gunpowder.

The pot explodes releasing a powerful voodoo spell which guides the ship to monkey island.  All the stuff isn't necessary to get the spell, it's just useless stuff you won't need!

Use the map on the red hot fire to get a flaming mass.

Go to the store room and get more gunpowder.

Go onto the deck.

Put the gunpowder in the cannon nozzle and use the rope on the cannon as a fuse.

Use the pot as a helmet, light the cannon... 

Part III

  When on the monkey island map, move the mouse pointer around to highlight any hotspots.  This will help to find places and objects

The cannon will send you to the beach.

Pick up the banana.

Go to the fort on the western side of the island.

Push the cannon and get the cannon ball.

Get the gunpowder.

Get the rope.

Get the spyglass.

Talk to Herman Toothrot.

Go to the river fork and pick up the stone under the note. Look at it, it's a piece of flint.

Climb up the hill with the footholds and  at the middle of the hill, there is a catapult.

Push/pull it to adjust its aim.

Go to the hill top and use the spyglass.

If you cannot see the banana tree, go back down and adjust the catapult again.  Keep doing this until it's on target.

Push the rock to activate the catapult.

A message will be shown if you hit the banana tree. If you didn't hit it, just try again from the heap of rocks.

Hitting the tree causes the bananas to drop. Collect them later on when you go to the beach.

Go down the hill.

Go to the pond at the end of the dry river bed and you will find a man hanging on the tree.

To get the rope in his hand:

Go back to the river fork and walk to the dam.

Use the gunpowder on the dam.

Use the flint on the cannon ball to produce a spark.

This blows up the dam and releases the water, so go back to the pond and the log will be floating, the dead body is on the ground.

Get the rope from the dead body.

Go to the crack.

There is a pair of oars at the bottom, so tie the rope on the strong branch and go down the rope.

Tie the other rope on the sturdy stump.

Climb down to get the oars.

Go to the beach with the banana tree and grab the bananas.

Use the oars with the boat and travel by sea to the northern part of the island.

Note: You must land your boat on a beach before you can travel on foot.

Go to the village in the north.

Go to the giant head and grab the bananas from the fruit bowl.

You are stopped by three cannibals, so talk to them.

After being locked in the 'guest' room, get the skull.

Open the loose board under the skull and go out of the village.

Go to the forest north of the beach with the banana tree to find the monkey.

Look at the monkey. Give him the five bananas which makes him happy and he follows you.

When you are successful, you will find a gray dot following you wherever you go.

If you happen to lose sight of him, go back to look for him. (This only happens when traveling by boat).

Go to the clearing at the eastern end of the island and make sure the monkey is following you.

Go to the totem pole and  move the cursor around until you find the nose ( which you should pull) on the totem pole.

The monkey will then pull the nose for you so that you can go near the Gigantic Monkey's Head. Pick up the wimpy little idol and look at it.

Go back to the village and give it to the cannibals. They will then be friendly towards you from now on.

Go back to the hut and get the banana picker, go to the right and Herman Toothrot will be waiting for you.

Exchange the banana picker for the monkey head key and re-enter the cannibal village.

The cannibals will talk to you and give them the leaflet.

They will give you the navigator's head and necklace, so go to the Gigantic Monkey Head.

Use the key to clean the Gigantic Monkey Ear to open the Monkey Head.

Go inside the Monkey Head, using the navigator's head to guide you.

It's nose will be pointing to the correct direction!

Keep following it until you have found the ghost ship, but don't go inside yet.

Talk to the navigator's head and ask him until he agrees to give you the necklace.

Wear the necklace before you enter the ghost ship. It will make you invisible to the ghosts.

Go to the captain's room and use the magnetic compass on the key.

Go to the deck and climb down the hatch.

You will be in the bedroom. Go to the passage to the right. Get the ghost feather from the chickens.

Unlock the hatch with the key and go down to find yourself surrounded by rats.

To get past the rats, go back to the bedroom and use the ghost feather on the sleeping ghost.

He will drop the wine bottle. Grab the jug o'grog and go back to the rats room.

Pour the jug o'grog on the dish and get the glob of grease.

Go back to the deck and use the glob of grease on the squeaky door.

Open it and get the ghost tools from beside the ghost guard.

Go back to the ghost chickens and use the ghost tools on the glowing crate to open it.

Get the sacred voodoo root and go back to the cave.

Cut screen

After hearing the news and getting the root, talk to funny ghost, but don't kill him. When your crew is back, listen to their conversation.

Part IV

After the next journey, you will be at the docks.

Use the potion on any ghost you encounter.

Go to the church and talk to Lechuck.

Your potion becomes jammed and you are whacked by Lechuck over and over. Guybrush flies high...

When you are at the ship emporium, try to get to the root beer before Lechuck whacks you.

Grabbed the root beer? Good, now use on Lechuck successfully and destroy him for ever and ever and...until monkey island 2! Well done you've beaten Lechuck!
