As we climbed atop the shattered concrete building a new morn greeted us, its warm beauty in stark contrast to the mournful ruins that lay in slumber. I imagined the children past and vibrant memories they might hold of this rooftop slide. But only the metal bones remain, slowly but surely being eroded by the countless storms that plague Gunkanjima.
The silence wasn’t to hold for long however, as a distant clatter of helicopter blades came from the horizon. Time to get back inside…
This is an incredible picture.
I’m flying into Nagasaki to explore gunkajima. Any chance you want to go back in October or could refer me to someone who does?
Hey Nathan. Sorry, I’m not available to go very easily as it’s pretty far away and expensive :(. There’s always the official tours I suppose?
I wish there where more photos of the island before it was shutdown. Wonderful color and warmth in that morning sky.
Thanks Edward :). I am compiling a big post about the history of Gunkanjima posting some point in the near future, so sit tight!
